Yorkshire flock

By Alison Park, 07 October 2010 – 0 comment

65 Swaledale ewes have arrived in a wagon from Buckden in the Yorkshire Dales. Autumn is when the main sheep sales take place at auction marts all over the country, but these came from farmer Richard's brother and sister-in-law's hill farm where they keep 1000 ewes. The flock was gathered in and Richard's choices made with the help of an eagle-eyed relative who compared everything from teat to teeth to make the best selection. The sheep that got through will be mated with a Blue Faced Leicester tup in early November and lamb in March or April.

  • Veg Season

Growing Well's Crop Share scheme is up and running for the season. Tell too many people about it and perhaps there won't be enough organic broad beans, spinach, courgettes, salad leaves, herbs and new potatoes to go round. Best keep it quiet then.
