Switch to Organic Milk

By Alison Park, 14 May 2010 – 1 comment

My brother, farmer Richard, was on local TV last night: Border Lookaround. Standing in a picturesque field of our cows he was interviewed about the Organic Milk Supplier's Cooperative (OMSCO)  promotion of the benefits to wildlife of consumers switching to organic milk. Richard got a few seconds to say that from organisms in the soil to predators in the trees, organic farmers nurture natural systems. Three more-or-less baffled shoppers were then filmed on an anonymous street, upholding  the interviewer's notion that organic milk is expensive. I was frustrated by the difficulty of getting the message across that it costs less than £1 a week for a family of four to switch to organic milk and it comes with loads of other benefits, including environmentally sensitively farmed land

We drink Organic milk whenever possible, but because we choose to get milk from our milk man (to support 'buy local' but also to cut down on plastic waste), we cannot get Organic. Could someone organise milk men to sell it in the Langdale area please (and in bottles too!!) Thanks

  • Veg Season

Growing Well's Crop Share scheme is up and running for the season. Tell too many people about it and perhaps there won't be enough organic broad beans, spinach, courgettes, salad leaves, herbs and new potatoes to go round. Best keep it quiet then.
