Milk Matters

By Alison Park, 08 April 2011 – 2 comments

The milk in the farm shop chillers is now from Brades Farm at nearby Farleton. We have responded to the poor liquid milk price in relation to rising costs.  Low Sizergh Farm cows' milk will still go to Windermere Ice Cream Company for their fabulous flavours, and to cheesemaker Chris Sandham for our 3 Kendal cheeses. Regretfully it is not viable to continue having relatively small amounts of liquid milk bottled, but we know that John and April's cows at Brades Farm produce top quality milk.

I and my wife have been visiting LSB and its shop and tea room for the last 15 years and still consider it to be the best we have visited.

I understand the pressures on local diary farmers and the loss in many cases of their herds and farms. I think it is a scandal which is part of a bigger motive - the introduction of cloned cattle into the herds by big business and this government has allowed it to happen.

I would be interested in your thoughts regarding cloned meat/milk and its impact on the foodchain and us mere mortals. I would also like you to confirm that the milk or beef to be imported from other suppliers to LSB will be carefully chosen so that it does not originate from cloned cattle.

Please do not succumb to big business and corrupt politicians.

    Thanks, Dave

We have high and consistent standards in terms of how we farm and we are fortunate this is exemplified in products you can buy in the shop and enjoy in the tea room. This won't change! These links might explain more: Farmer Richard explains his interest in breeding http://ow.ly/4yytR ; The Soil Association which has good arguments against cloning http://ow.ly/4yyCA . DEFRA's position is at http://ow.ly/4yyHm

Other than that please continue to champion this way of farming and buy good, local food.

Growing Well's Crop Share scheme is up and running for the season. Tell too many people about it and perhaps there won't be enough organic broad beans, spinach, courgettes, salad leaves, herbs and new potatoes to go round. Best keep it quiet then.
