What we do
The farm is a 250 acre dairy farm, with 120 cows. They have a calf every year. Much
of
the day is taken up with milking and looking after the animals.
In winter the cows live in large buildings and are fed with
crops that are grown during the warm weather.
There are 250 laying hens
and 20 sheep.
Low Sizergh Farm is part of the National Trust’s
Sizergh estate. On the farm
Organic farmers work by building up a healthy,
fertile soil, recycling natural wastes, creating wildlife
habitats, protecting
the environment and providing high standards of animal welfare.
We
have worked with the National Trust on many of the conservation
features on the farm. There is a pond, and an orchard that
has been restored with traditional varieties of plums, apples,
damsons and pears.
Hedges provide barriers for cows and sheep,
but also shelter, passageways and food for animals and birds.
Some of our hedges
are at least 400 years old. We take care of them by laying
or cutting them in the traditional way, making sure they
remain bushy and dense.
The farm trail leaflet, available in
the farm shop, highlights all these features and more.
