Why not make your visit to Low Sizergh Barn part of a day trip in the area? Here are some ideas we hope will give you inspiration:

Sizergh Castle

Home to the Strickland family today and for the last 750 years, our distinguished neighbours are well worth a visit. Set in large, beautifully landscaped gardens and based around an impressive 14th Century pele tower, this romantic fortified mansion contains some of the finest Elizabethan carved overmantels in the country, as well as a collection of good English and French furniture and family portraits. Of particular interest are the large gardens surrounding the Castle with enchanting wildflower and water gardens adding to the charm of this elegant estate.

Literally a stones throw away, it is an easy and worthwhile walk to Low Sizergh Barn, and can be enjoyed by children and families with pushchairs.

Cartmel & Cartmel Fell

The vibrant medieval village of Cartmel is a bit of a hot spot on the foodie circuit with its famous sticky toffee pudding. Offering stunning views of the South Lakeland fells and countryside, Cartmel has grown around its famous 12th Century medieval Priory. Take a horse and carriage ride around the village or enjoy a walk around Cartmel Fell with its church.

Cartmel is a short, easy drive to or from Low Sizergh Barn, using the A590.

Muncaster Castle

Undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in the Lake District for a family day out, this historic haunted castle, still a lived in family home, lies in an idyllic setting in the Western Lake District. The Gardens, dating back to the 18th Century, are now home to one of Europe’s largest collections of Rhododendrons and the castle is also home to the World Owl Centre. Large and small, fierce and friendly, beautiful and strange, you will find one of the largest collections of these thrilling birds of prey in existence.

Why not spend the morning with us and then head out to Muncaster for the afternoon and enjoy the spectacular late afternoon heron feed?

Unfortunately, there’s not enough room here to tell you in detail about all the places we like but here’s a few sights and attractions nearby, which you might wish to check out yourself:

Holker Hall & Gardens

A Word From...

  • Downloaded a walk from your website. Stately Homes walk, from Helsington Church down to Sizergh Castle and back. Took the kids, we had a superb family walk and picnic, we didn't realise such a lovely walk was on our doorstep. Thank you
