Growing Well

Organic growing

Not just a ‘project’ or a ‘scheme’, Growing Well is a community-owned business producing up to a tonne of fruit and vegetables a week at the height of the growing season. It’s an impressive undertaking and the team, made up of volunteers and students, nurture a massive half a million plants a year and grow over 60 varieties of fruit and veg. A certified organic grower registered with the soil association, their fresh, seasonal, organic produce is sold to local crop sharers .

Helping you grow well too

At the same time Growing Well offers a friendly, non-threatening and non-judgemental workplace to anyone recovering from mental health problems. Volunteers are invited to play a vital role in all aspects of the business from getting dirty hands in the fields to driving tractors or working in the office. Structured to support the development of confidence and skills, it offers the perfect environment to grow and recover.

A horticultural mentor

Whether you’re a keen gardener, have an allotment or are considering a career in Horticulture, Growing Well has many years of experience in providing both informal and accredited training courses in horticulture and other land-based activities.

Encouraging little green fingers

Growing Well also offers educational visits led by qualified teachers and volunteers. Children love to sew seeds, pick vegetables and prepare tasty dishes from the organic produce, learning how the food they eat reaches their plates. Combined with a visit to the milking shed to meet our cows and calves, and a round of collecting eggs from our hen houses, it’s sure to leave a lasting impression. Growing Well’s Education Coordinator Pauline Sprott is a former teacher: “I really believe that children should know where their food comes from and how to cook it. This goes back a long time for me; it’s my personal passion that I really want to pass on.” A community of enthusiastic people who share a common passion for growing, Growing Well is a truly inspirational enterprise.
