Get bread

It’s Real Bread Maker Week, celebrating local skilled bakers, users of bread machines and, best of all,  hands that measure flour into bowls, mix and knead.

Local bakers supplying Low Sizergh Barn are Staff of Life, Lovingly Artisan and Grange Bakery. These small bakeries have attitude about bread that we share here at the farm, driven by the taste of wholesome, flavoursome loaves. There is fulfilment in the making and eating of real bread, and the taste comes from a pretty minimal range of ingredients: flour, water, yeast and salt.

Ana & Nick Jones at the Watermill, Little Salkeld supply everything bread making related, and we have a good stock in the shop. Their flour is stone ground at one of the few remaining water-powered mills in the country. Ana is a skilful and fun bread-making teacher. The mill has special events for National Mills Weekend on 12th and 13th May.

The Real Bread Campaign’s co-founder is Andrew Whitley. He owned the famous Village Bakery at Melmerby, Cumbria. His book, Bread Matters, is free to anyone that joins The Real Bread Campaign this week, until 13th May.
